Dear Amy, I just moved into a new condo and I am starting with a completely empty family room. I'd like the look of warmth and casual comfort. What are the basic pieces that I need to focus on to get the foundation? I feel like I need a recipe. Thanks in advance for some direction.
Mason W., Pennington, NJ

Dear Mason, You have the right idea by starting with the basics and not focusing on the details as of yet. Here is my recipe: 1 comfortable, substantial sofa covered in a warm-tone, neutral fabric like a. cotton chenille; 1 chunky, library-style coffee table that looks durable and a bit distressed; 1 area rug with warm earth tones in the pattern with colors like sage green, russet, gold, camel, olive or tobacco; 2 interesting lamp tables, bringing in natural elements, such as metal, iron or rattan; at least 2 table lamps and perhaps one floor lamp to create ample ambient lighting; an appropriate media storage cabinet system or armoire to house your electronic equipment. With these basic yet essential pieces, you will establish the mood of the room and meet your livability needs at the same time. William Morris once said, "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful."
From my home to yours,
Amy Mink
