Dear Amy, We just purchased a desk for our son. I would like to get some desk accessories that are age-appropriate, but I have not been able to find any at the local stores. He is in 4th grade and likes planes, which is the theme of his room. What can I do to make some desk items that fit into this theme? I am not very artistic, so I am hoping for ideas that are simple to execute.

Dear Debra, I suggest that you go to your local wallpaper store, or try Newtown Paint and Paper. If you go through the juvenile wallpaper books, they will surely have some papers with a pilot-aviation theme. You can order a single roll and cover a stock desk pad with it that can be purchased from one of the large office supply stores. You can also use the paper to cover an orange juice can, and that can be a pencil holder. If there is a coordinating fabric available, perhaps you can cover a bulletin board with that fabric or wallpaper and attach to the wall area above his desk. This is probably one of the easiest ways to achieve the effect that you are looking for. Your son will be delighted to see this theme carried out into his new desk area. Perhaps it will inspire him to fly high for school achievements.

From my home to yours,

Amy Mink
