My sofa is 18 years old and looking very tired. I do love the piece, but I cannot decide whether to have a slipcover made or to have the sofa reupholstered. How do I make this decision?
Michael Murphy, Holland, PA

Dear Michael: There are pros and cons to each choice here. Generally, it does cost less to have a slipcover made, and the advantage is that you can change the look once the slipcover is removed. In your case, however, since the original fabric needs replacing, chances are that you would not remove the slipcovers once on. Reupholster provides a more tailored and lasting, refined look. Though it does cost more than slipcovers, it is well worth the investment if you have a quality piece of furniture that you want to keep for years to come. The big plus with re-upholstering a sofa is that the frame can be reinforced and strengthened and the cushion contents can be upgraded and changed to bolster up the look of the piece. These are important enhancements that will go far in adding to the life and serviceability of your sofa.
Also, keep in mind that with this process, you get to make the fabric choices-which can be quite fun. Contrasting fabric for piping, new decorative pillows for the sofa-all these details can turn your sofa from something frumpy to fabulous. I would like to recommend Schwartz Slipcover Workshop in Morrisville. They do wonderful work and can offer you some great ideas.
