Dear Amy, I have a lovely fireplace in my family room, however, the hearth opening and the mantel need some help. I have not given this area any attention, but I feel that something can be done to make more of a statement in the room. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dear Noreen, The fireplace and hearth area can be interpreted as the heart of your home. Years ago, the fireplace was an essential source of warmth and often used for cooking as well. Today the hearth still carries the same symbolic meaning to families. Start with the mantel area. Some pillar candles in varying heights, framed photos, or even small-scale garden statuary can be used to create a focal point. Just think of the mantel as another surface to gather the things that you love. A collection of small vases filled with seasonal flowers or stalks can also be used. Rocks, seashells, pinecones or other natural objects can be placed on the mantel or collected in interesting containers. As far as the fireplace surround, a good investment is a metal, decorative fireplace screen. Patio World in Newtown and French Lace in Newtown are both good resources and carry a variety of beautiful fireplace screens and tool ensembles. You can also place preserved dried topiaries or urns flanking either side of the hearth opening- this creates a sense of balance and warmth. With these decorative finishing touches, your family will be even more drawn to the idea of cozying up to the fire.

From my home to yours,

Amy Mink
