I have visited some designer show houses and noticed that the use of sisal carpets is very popular. I love the natural look of these rugs but am wondering about their durability and comfort. Please give me your opinion before I consider buying one.

Dear Marge:
Sisal is a very appealing
carpet material for many reasons. Their warm, honey-colored fibers bring a timeless yet natural look to any room and do a good job of playing down the formality of traditional furnishings. True sisal is made from woven jute fibers and does feel a bit scratchy on bare feet. Rooms where high traffic patterns involving young children or food consumption may not be the best place to utilize sisal. There are a number of wool-nylon blend carpets available that mimic the look of sisal and come in a range of camel and honey-colored tones. These rugs offer more ease of use in terms of maintenance. You may also find contrasting decorative banding or borders available, which add visual interest. Before purchasing, consider the lifestyle needs of your room and then you can determine whether a natural sisal carpet is the answer or whether you need to choose a sisal look-alike in more durable materials. Either way, the sisal look is one of restraint and sophistication, a combination that works in most homes.
